Peter Gillespie (Executive Director/Lead Organizer)
Peter was hired in 1998 as NAG's first Lead Organizer. Since then he has led the organizing, outreach, and advocacy efforts to create a sustainable and more equitable North Brooklyn community. Peter was hired in 2001 as NAG's first Executive Director to build the organization's capacity; initiate new programs in pollution prevention and economic development; expand the Board of Directors; established a walk-in office/community meeting space; reinvigorate the volunteer-base; and encouraged the emergence of new leadership. In 2004, Peter initiated the North Brooklyn Alliance to ensure that the NYC's proposed rezoning of Greenpoint/Williamsburg reflects the community's concerns. In March 2003 Peter established NAG's economic development project: Preserving and Nurturing Local Industry in response to an ongoing gentrification process that threatens to displace hundreds of industries and thousands of good jobs. In July 2002, Peter co-founded the Greenpoint Williamsburg Waterfront Task Force to stop an ill-conceived 1,100-megawatt power plant on Williamsburg waterfront. Peter is also a member of the local Community Board.
