Details About Affordable Housing Application Process
We want to ensure that the information about any of these "affordable" units is spread far and wide and we want to help people fill out the applications to ensure that everyone has a fair chance to participate in the housing lotteries. But please be aware that we are not renting any apartments ourselves, we have no part in the decision process in who gets the affordable units, have no input in the income levels, and are not a rental agency.
Details about the process in applying for one of these apartments can be found after the jump in the full post

To get a sense of the layout of the buildings and where the affordable rental units are in relation to the units for sale, check out the design plans (click on "neighborhood" to see the site plan). We do not have any information of the layout of the plans for the rental units as of yet. Unfortunately, the tenants in the rental units will not have access to the EDGE amenities like the pool and screening rooms.
Ok, so you think you are qualified and you want to apply. Applications can be downloaded from www.williamsburgcommunityapartments.com
Feel free to come into the office for help with the applications. We can download the application for you, help you fill it out, and make copies of the completed application for your records. I have really neat handwriting and would be more than willing to help you fill out the application or answer any questions about the application.
Please remember, that you cannot submit more than one application. If you do, you will be disqualified. We are still waiting to hear back from HPD to learn their official definition of "household". Please give us a call if you have any questions about how to define your household and how to apply.
As always, we will be running our walk-in hours from 4-8pm on Mondays & 2-8pm on Tuesdays (except holidays). If those times do not work, you can make an appointment for a time that better suits your schedule by calling Ryan Kuonen @ (718) 384-2248.
Completed applications must be returned by regular mail (that's right, no priority, certified, over-night or registered mail will be accepted) to the PO Box listed on the application. Applications must be postmarked by December 3, 2008.
Applications will be randomly selected by lottery. Preference will be given to New York City residents. Preference for 50% of the units will be given to people who currently reside in Brooklyn Community Board 1 (that's pretty much all of Greenpoint and Williamsburg; 11211 & 11222) or can prove they lived in the neighborhood on or after October 4, 2004. There are other preferences for eligible applicants with mobility impairments (5% of units), visual and/or hearing impairments (2% of units), and City of NY Municipal Employees (5% preference).
And if you do not meet the income qualifications on this project, I am sorry to say that right now, this is the only project in the Greenpoint-Williamsbug area that is offering "affordable Units" for rent. We will contact you immediately when new offers arise...

what if after you are drawn from the lottery your income is over?
They consider the income at the moment your salary/credit get checked. This is past, the lottery winners were notified and checked around March/April and apartment assigned in June. Now we are waiting for the building to complete the constructions and get ready to move.
Hi, i haven't heard anything. is the lottery complete? have the tenants been selected already?
thx.
Do you have any information concerning the layout of the rentals units?
Not true - I was just called to submit additional documents after being selected. The process is not over and there are still units unassigned.
they are extremely meticulous with all documents received. they informed me that my application was submitted to HPD and hopefully the next step is to hear the news, either good or bad. did anyone get their apt. assignment yet? any idea as to when people will start moving in?
I went today for the first time to submit documents and there were others that came in to sign their leases. Oddly enough, they don't yet have permission to enter the buildings yet so they were signing without even seeing the apartment. One couple signing told me that they were given a move-in date of the 15th but I'm sure the date will be pushed back.
wow, that's kind of messed up.. what if people want to change their mind about the apartment? sorry... gotta wait a year! they should set aside a later date for the apartments to be shown & then proceed with the lease signing... did they mention how many apartments were remaining?
I just received my completed application (post marked Sept 3) marked wrong address. I double checked and it was correct. Now the deadline has passed, what can I do?

The deadline was December of *2008*, if you sent the letter in September *2009* you missed the deadline. Sorry.

The deadline from the people's firehouse was Dec 2009
so i had my interview in october and everything seemed to be okay - i still haven't heard back from them. does anyone know how many studio/1br apartments are left at this point?
I was called two weeks ago for teh 3rd time to re submit my documents because they were now old and could not go by the information on them.
I know of one person who was given the ok and told she would be able to move in but no date was given to her nor a unit number. Have no clue whats going on but hope someone does.
I got a letter for an interview today in late February. Does anyone know how the buildings look? Are they nice? Are the rooms nice? Is it brand new? etc,
does anyone know when move in day will be?
They called me to come in tomorrow to check out the apartment. I'll keep you guys posted on how it looks. Also, apartments have been assigned as well. So excited!
So after anticipating for over a full year, we were able to check out the apartment this past Thurs. We were shown the wrong apartment at first, but despite the mistake with the floor the one-room apt. had the same layout. Once you go in through the doors you have your kitchen. There is a cutout through the kitchen that overlooks the living room ahead. The dining area is quite small leaving no room to fit a good sized table since its a bar area for meals connected to the kitchen. Then there's the small sized bedroom with closest space. There's also two other closets, one for hanging coats and another for storage with shelves. Some folks are expected to be moving in as soon as next week. Oh and if you receive a phone call be prepared for even more paperwork, bank statements and paystubs. Anybody else moving in soon? If so, when?
thanks for the info on the apartment layout! you said you had to provide pay stubs again? had it been over 120 days since the last ones you showed them? or do you have to provide a final set of pay stubs/bank statements before you sign the lease and move in? i remember reading in the paperwork that i signed that once you've been approved by the city for an apartment you're good to go and your income can increase and it wont affect your status. is that only if you've already moved in?
no problem, the paystubs required were six of the latest paystubs and the bank statements needed was the continuation from whatever statement that was last submitted previously, i'm not sure what happens if your income exceeds the set limit after being approved, i read somewhere that a surcharge is added on, that's a good question, if you find out would you please post??
Hello all-
Glad this post was a great resource for you all. Just an FYI-anonymous comments are moderated every couple days, so if you want your comment to show up quicker, post it non-anonymously if you can.
So are you saying that the apartment is small? Id the living room small. I received a letter saying that I was approved and they gave me an apt number and all but I "upgrated" to a one bedroom so now I have to wait...I totally forgot allabout it and to my surprise, I got the letter last week. Anyways, I want to know how small it is. It sounds small fron what u decribed
How did you upgrade to the one bedroom? I was approved for a studio but its wa too small for me. I'm coming from a one bedroom in williamsburg now.
Can you tell me more about the studio? How small is it? Is it tiny?
Also, can anyone tell me how long it took for the city to get back to you with approval? The Edge people submitted my stuff to HDC about a month ago. I am still waiting for an answer.
It wasn't half bad at all. Decent space. Open floor plan so it feels bigger than it is. Good size bathroom and closet space for one person ( Possibly two if you both can downsize a little)
I make 43,000 so I'm eligible for both a studio and a one bedroom, I got the letter saying that I got the studio but in reality I wanted a one bedroom. I called them and asked if I can get the one br instead and I got a call last week from them saying that I got it... yay!
An article about our lovely apartment complex:
http://curbed.com/archives/2010/02/25/subsidized_renters_at_williamsburgs_edge_ask_whats_the_holdup.php
To the people who changed from a studio to a 1br after being awarded the studio, how long did it take for them to approve the switch?
was anyone else disqualified because they asked for your 2009 tax return?
I got a phone call within two weeks of making the request to change stating that I got the one bedroom.
another fyi...

it's just so upsetting when these folks are soooooo adamant to say that move-in will be within "a week" after visiting the place; how is everyone handling this situation with the push back date with their current landlords?
I have an interview tomorrow. I also have a horrible ex-boss who hasnt sent me my W-2 yet! I have been harassing her and finally had to file a claim with the IRS. Would I actually be denied if I don't have my 2009 taxes?
still no COA, i've been approved but i can't see the apartment or sign a lease until they get the COA it seems? anyone know what's up with that?
