Hooray for Williamsburg Walks

Williamsburg Walks won the 2008 Streetsies "Best Local Livable Streets Project" Award. Congratulations to Connie, Jason, Teresa, the merchants of Bedford Ave, and everyone else who was involved for their hard work!

There is a good chance that Williamsburg Walks will be returning this summer, but we'll need a bunch of volunteer help. A call for volunteers will follow in the next month or so.

It would not have happened without Connie Colvin's genius at weaving a million threads into one fabric, working through, over or around red tape and other obstacles -- all with a remarkable level of coolheadedness and humor. THANK YOU CONNIE.

I really hope that next year we consider doing this on Driggs within the park--it would be good to see how that street can work if it is shut down on weekends, and would provide a more enjoyable, treelined atmosphere. I think having it on Bedford made it too Chamber-of-Commerce-y.

Sounds good. And if there's a heat wave again on one of the Saturdays at least there's some shade. Last year we avoided programming because we were trying not to emulate a street fair, but this year it'd be nice to have some performances like spoken word, storytelling, acoustic music. What do you think?

There WERE games, I seem to remember.

I was glad there was no music. I enjoyed the quiet.

agree. since our main park (mccarren) is an active use park, and most of our smaller parks are either play grounds or dirty offramp triangles (or both), this community lacks what they call "passive" open space, where you can just hang out.
