Tuesday, July 28, 2009See you Tuesday at the City Council Forum!See you Tuesday at the Ultimate Verbal Smackdown 33rd Council District Forum Tuesday, July 28, 2009, 7-9pm Williamsburg Northside Preschool 152 N 5th Street ![]() Seven people are seeking the Council Member seat that represents much of Greenpoint and Williamsburg, as David Yassky is running for higher office. The September 15th Democratic Primary will likely determine the winner of the election, and yet the election is largely below the radar. That's why NAG, along with five other organizations, is holding a forum for the 33rd Council District Tuesday, July 28. The issues important to North Brooklynites: affordable housing, open space, transportation, public safety, environment, quality-of-life, education and youth need to be kept front and center. Come and find out what your next City Council Member will do! More information about the forum is available at http://www.nag-brooklyn.org/smackdown Labels: council forum, council race |

Make it clear that a one way Kent Av. (with a closed south bound lane) is not the way to accommodate the Greenway, safely.

Not sure what this has to do with the City Council Forum, but as we have made clear, NAG supports one-way Kent Avenue to accomodate a separated bike lane and to restore some on-street parking, but the final design must address pedestrian safety and mitigate the impacts of any traffic spillovers into the rest of the network, including Wythe Ave and North 11th Street that might occur.
I haven't heard from opponents of the current plan how we improve pedestrian and bike safety on Kent Ave, reduce auto-dependence in our neighborhood, and accommodate the need for on-street loading and limited parking on Kent without a one-way Kent Ave. I'm open to suggestions as to how this would work and look forward to hearing those that achieve these goals.
If NAG's position is to support a one-way Kent Av.
then I implore you to put the pressure on the DOT to red-line Pulaski Bridge, McGuiness & parts of Greenpoint Avenue and create a truck thru route. No more trucks that aren't making local deliveries cutting down Kent to get to the BQE or the Navy Yard. The bulk of these trucks are NOT local deliveries. They need to go around neighborhoods like ours. Look at the truck map issued by the DOT . Look at the huge gap in designated truck thru routes in North Williamsburg. We need one, and we need it enforced. The "detour" is a half-measure that will avail us nothing but more exhaust , more accidents , and more noise.
