Brooklyn Papers reports that Northside Piers' esplanade is going to open this week or next.
As we previously noted, the opening was held up supposedly for safety reasons, but needs to be open in order for the market-rate building to get its permanent C of O. And folks are moving into the first tower which is reaching completion. As a result of these recent developments, some are correctly wondering when we'll be able to get to the public esplanade. As I recall DCP saying during the rezoning, the following have to be true before any market-rate building gets its final certificate of occupancy:
The experience with this building is a lesson we must take to heart as the Domino Sugar development goes through the review process. If there are problems with allowing public access as the site is being constructed, even though it is legally allowed, there must be some way to make it up to the community. h/t: I'm Not Saying Photo: ZackVS (flickr) Labels: northside piers, open space, waterfront Wednesday, August 6, 2008Tour Newtown Creek
The Working Harbor Committee is setting up another one of their Newtown Creek Cruises for September 14th. It's pricey--$50--and weirdly leaves from 23rd Street in the city, but highly recommended. I went up the Creek with the Urban Divers a few years back and it was a really intense experience. Some parts of it are unrecognizable as water, and then in other spots you can see little piers and things that hint of how great it would be if this waterway were cleaned up and accessible to people, not just corporations.
